Ten’s Biographical Information
I do not think that my biographical details are of great importance, so I relate this information with some reluctance:
My mother told me that I entered this world in the wee hours of the morning as a blue baby gasping for air, a thin membranous veil--locally believed to signify the gift of second sight--covering my face. This happened in the isolated rural area of Marienberg in the province Overijssel in the Netherlands, on Pentecost Sunday (June 8, 1930), while a severe thunderstorm was raging. That same night, two heifers were killed by lightning within a mile's distance from our home.
I have been a permanent resident of the United States since 1955.
So as not to burden my audience with having to remember my full name “Jan ten Broeke”, I took the simple nom de brosse “Ten”
